Could Manti Te’o be gay?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past day, you’ve heard about all the hoopla going on with Notre Dame star football player, Manti Te’o.
When I first heard about it, the whole thing was pretty confusing…
If you haven’t read the article from Deadspin yet, you can check it out here (be prepared, it’s one long article).
Anyway, the gist of it is that Manti Te’o had this super dramatic story about losing both his grandmother and long time girlfriend on the same day (or close to it depending on which source you believe) and triumphs over the circumstances and has a killer football season.
The media, of course, did a fantastic job of adding to the drama and story. Interviewing Te’o after games and asking how tough it must have been, etc.
Well, it turns out that whole thing was all a hoax.
There was no girlfriend that died.
And the story that the university and Te’o are sticking to is that he was the victim.
But, if you dig a little deeper into the story, there’s things that just don’t make sense, that don’t line up.
Like when his Dad says that this girl would fly out to Hawaii and the two would meet up and do whatever they “did”.
The story now is that the two never met face to face.
This “girl” that Te’o met online was someone that he had supposedly never seen, ever.
Excuse me while I laugh.
Uh, has he never heard of FaceTime or Skype?
Anyway, the story takes another turn when the article mentions that the “girl’s” twitter account (that was supposedly how they met) was actually controlled by another friend, a guy.
And the story goes on stating that the guy behind the whole thing was the one that would always show up to places that this “girl” was supposed to be.
Seems kind of fishy to me.
So, after digging through the facts and seeing some of the theories posted online, it seems (to me at least), that there are really only 3 possible things that could have happened.
- Te’o truly had no idea that the whole thing was fake. Now count me out of this camp. Like I said, I find it very hard to believe that someone be dating a girl and never have sent pics, used Skype or FaceTime.I just don’t buy it.It’s mind boggling to me that anyone could be that naive.
- Te’o was involved in the whole thingThis one is tough to chew on too.Te’o is supposedly a devout Mormon and is a man of strong character. I find it pretty hard to believe that he would be behind this whole thing just to gain publicity and potentially win the Heisman (he was runner up. Some thought he should have won because of the “adversity” that he faced). Now sure, people and kids do some crazy things but that just seems outlandish to me.
Especially given that the whole story took years to develop.
- Te’o is a closeted gayNow, I have no idea if this is the case and I’m not saying that he is. But, after reading the folks at OutSports.com and now the Huffington post, it got me to thinking it just could be.
Let’s think about this for a minute fellow gays.
Like I said, the guy comes from a very strong Mormon background. Are there many more backgrounds that have such an extreme view on homosexuality?
When we go through the process of discovering who we really are, we often find ourselves leaving double lives.
I know that I certainly did.
Wouldn’t it be in the realm of possibility that Te’o could have made this whole thing up to cover up a gay relationship and the whole thing went out of control?
Think about it.
By having this relationship he could…
…avoid having to deal with constant questions of whether he has a girlfriend or not.
…have an excuse not to pursue girls and seem like he was gay.
…have a relationship with a guy, share his feelings via social media and still seem “normal”.
Does that seem all that outlandish?
Let’s say, for arguments sake, that he was actually gay (and again, I have no idea if he is), doesn’t it seem like that’s a possibility?
That he could have been trying to cover it up and the life he was living that was a lie finally caught up to him?
I think it could.
It would be insanely unfortunate that the whole thing had to unfold this way but…
He could use it as a perfect time to finally come clean and come out.
And it could have such a massive impact on him and the gay community in a very positive way.
This could be the perfect time for an openly gay football player at the collegiate and professional level, for the first time, ever.
He could use this to highlight the tough, emotional struggle that LGBT youth have to go through when they come to terms with who they really are.
It’s unfortunate that our society has made it so difficult for people to feel comfortable with who they really are. Especially in a testosterone driven world such as football.
But, IF Te’o is in fact gay, this could be quite an opportunity to make our stories heard throughout the nation and hopefully bring some more acceptance to our community.
Something to think about Manti…
If you really are gay, you’ve got a whole community ready to support you :).
What do you think?
If he is gay, would you support him?
